How a roof leak investigation works in Pevensey
Some leaks only appear in certain weather. Driving rain from one direction, melting snow or a gutter that overflows in a downpour can all set it off. Telling us when it happens helps a lot and so do photos. Even on a dry day, a leak typically leaves clues: stained timbers, tide marks and damp underlay. Moisture readings show where materials are still wet. If you’re worried about water coming in around a roof light or dormer and water through the ceiling under a flat roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flat roof details, valleys and parapet gutters and slate and tile slopes alike.
Being in a small place like Pevensey makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned in advance. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Pevensey questions
Is Pevensey within the area you cover?
Yes. Pevensey is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Is the coastal weather around Pevensey hard on roofs?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
What should I do before you arrive?
Keep a note of when it leaks, and take photos. Clear access to the loft. Keep away from any light or socket that water is reaching.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when booking.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
Does the investigation include the repair?
The investigation is about finding the cause. The repair isn’t part of it. The report shows where the water gets in and what should be done, which whoever carries out the work can follow.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

- Basic, Standard or Premium

What to let us know when you contact us
Getting the details right at the start saves time. It is useful to include:
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- The address and postcode of the property
- What’s prompted the survey
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
When to book a survey in Pevensey
Some water in the loft isn’t rain at all. Warm, moist air from the house rises into a cold roof space and condenses, especially where ventilation is poor. Wet nail tips and damp underlay over a wide area are classic signs.
We’re frequently asked to look at:
- Wet patches on loft insulation
- Leaks at a dormer or roof window
- Brown rings on upstairs ceilings
- Damp ceilings under a flat roof
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St. Nicolas Church, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
What to check before booking
- What follow-up you get after the report
- Whether VAT is added on top
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA

What else we do in Pevensey
What we do, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes an hour or two for most homes, though a hard-to-trace leak can take longer. In a hamlet or village like Pevensey, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start with your notes and photos of the leak.
- Inside, we look at the stain and the ceiling around it.
- In the loft, we follow any signs of water back towards the roof.
- Outside, we check flashings, valleys, chimneys, gutters and flat roof details from every safe viewpoint.
- We email a written report showing where the water most likely gets in.
Before the survey
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
How to book
Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know the cost up front. Our price is from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Different roofs, different checks
Slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, corroded nails let slates slip. One slipped slate can be enough to cause a leak.
Parapet and box gutters
Hidden gutters run behind parapets or between roofs. A blocked outlet sends water over the lining and into the building.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Patching the spot above the stain often does not work. Because water travels, the real entry point may be somewhere else. We find the probable source before anyone starts work. In a place like Pevensey, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Leaks and storm damage in Pevensey
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Pevensey, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.
Landlords with a home close to Pevensey Bay station may find that finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. Take a building like Pevensey and Westham CofE Primary School: tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.
