Useful tips for Crowell property owners
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
Your insurer may send a loss adjuster to look at the damage. You will have your own independent record to refer to.
Keep the roof in good order between storms. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.
How a storm damage roof report works in Crowell
A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It does not price the repairs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. If you’re worried about loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and holes or cracks caused by debris, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Many homes in small places like Crowell face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How it works
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Crowell often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows and from the loft space where it’s safe.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
- You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave side gates unlocked

Advice
Crowell: your questions answered
Is Crowell within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Is my home in Crowell listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
How experienced are you?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.
What wind speed counts as a storm?
Each policy has its own definition. Many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but your policy sets the actual test.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
Can I check the roof after a storm?
Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

When to book a survey in Crowell
When you claim, your insurer may ask for evidence of the damage and its cause. An independent report gives you a clear record to send. Your insurer still makes the decision.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Damaged pots on the stack
- Loose or torn flashings
- Damaged flat roof membrane
- New damp or leaks inside
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
Before you book anyone

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Crowell
Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. The wider area around Crowell has a long history of building, with Adwell House about 2.9 miles west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you look after a building such as Mill Lane Community Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you own a rental within reach of Princes Risborough station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.

Why act early in Crowell
A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is typically better. Older cottages and farmhouses around Crowell can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
