Common questions in Messing
Is Messing within the area you cover?
Yes. Messing is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Is my home in Messing listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
What does the report include?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photos throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
What insurance do you have?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the images show where improvements may help.
Thermal roof survey in Messing
Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There’s an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. If you’ve noticed wet areas near outlets and upstands and ceilings that feel colder in places, we can find out what’s behind it.
Older buildings in small places like Messing may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
After the visit, you get a report with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Why act early in Messing

Older and listed buildings around Messing may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

How it works
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where it applies. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In a hamlet or village like Messing, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Preparing for the visit
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Advice
Landlord and commercial surveys in Messing
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.
Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there’s a pattern around them.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Single-ply PVC, TPO and EPDM roofs are often laid over insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.

Thermal roof surveys in Messing: local notes
Older buildings in Essex often have clay tiles and weatherboarding, and plenty of post-war and modern estates besides. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Take an older house close to Church of All Saints (messing): steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Messing Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. Layer Marney Tower, about 2.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Messing. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

DIY checks: what’s safe
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Don’t switch the heating off before the visit
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
