Flying and imaging in Brook Street
Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Parish Church of All Saints, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. With Smallhythe Place about 3.5 miles south-west, the area around Brook Street has a long history. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Drone roof survey in Brook Street: what you get
From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see inside. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. We survey fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and people most frequently book us about ponding and splits on a high flat roof and worn lead at chimneys and walls.
Older buildings in small places like Brook Street may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
After the visit, you get a report with photographs, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

What happens on the day
The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Brook Street often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey

Helping us price your survey

- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- Anything about access we should know
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
Booking is simple: just call 07833 053749 or email us, let us know about the property and we will suggest the right survey. The price is agreed up front.
Do you need a drone roof survey in Brook Street?
Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
If you look after a building such as Woodchurch Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Leave it or get it looked at?
With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. They show the location and extent of each defect, which helps when you ask for quotes. For an older or listed building in a place like Brook Street, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.

Tips that help
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.
Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.
Questions from Brook Street
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Brook Street?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Do you cover smaller places like Brook Street?
Yes, Brook Street is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Does someone need to be in?
That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in; we will agree the details as you book.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Brook Street?
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, including VAT.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
