How a drone roof survey works in Brookstreet
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. Typical surveys look at outlets choked with leaves and silt and loose ridge and hip tiles, on fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and chimney stacks.
Villages like Brookstreet often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Can I check my roof myself?
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Drones, thermal imaging and Brookstreet roofs
There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary the Virgin, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take an hour or two at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Somewhere like Brookstreet needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Advice
Questions from Brookstreet
Is my home in Brookstreet listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Is drone flying allowed in Brookstreet?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Brookstreet?
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when booking.
What insurance do you have?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
What’s the best way to book?
Simply ring 07833 053749 or email us. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. For an older or listed building in a place like Brookstreet, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. Surveys run seven days a week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant.
When to book a survey in Brookstreet
Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
Anyone responsible for a site like The Flitch Green Academy will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
What to check before booking
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- When you will get the report
- What follow-up you get after the report
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
What this survey cannot tell you
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
- Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.
