Drones, thermal imaging and North End roofs
The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, alongside plenty of post-war and newer estates. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
If you look after a building such as The Flitch Green Academy, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. The streets around a church such as Church of St Andrew are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
North End is about 7 miles south-west of Braintree, in Essex. From houses to flats and shops in North End, we can survey the roof. Our area takes in places right across Essex, large and small. There is also a page for Chelmsford.
Every address in CM6 is covered for drone roof surveys. You will find streets such as Bennett's Lane, Mill Road and Black Chapel Lane, all of which we cover. If you are just outside North End, we cover Causeway End (1 mile north-east), Little Dunmow (1 mile north), Ford End (1 mile south-east), Felsted (1 mile north-east) and Brookstreet (1 mile north). Within a short drive, we also cover Chelmsford (8 miles south-east), Braintree (7 miles north-east), Harlow (14 miles west), Maldon (14 miles south-east), Billericay (15 miles south) and Witham (10 miles east).

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in North End
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. If you’ve noticed storm damage on steep or tall roofs and lead work pulling away at abutments, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like North End are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller. In a small place like North End, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the price for the job before booking.

Helping us price your survey
There’s no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- The property’s address and postcode
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form whenever suits you.
Tips from our surveys
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
- Let us know the exact address as you book
- Let us know about any leaks or concerns
There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year, and whether work has done its job.
After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
Can I check my roof myself?
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
How the survey works
Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes about one to two hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Somewhere like North End needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Honest limits
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
North End questions
How do I find out if my home in North End is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you come out to North End?
Yes, North End is covered. We work right across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
What about my neighbours’ privacy?
No, the camera is kept on your roof. Next door’s windows and gardens are kept out of shot as far as possible. A quick word with the neighbours is a good idea.
Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?
Yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We fly a sub-250g drone and keep it in sight at all times.
Will I get photos?
Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, which makes the report easy to follow.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
