About our drone roof survey in Ford End
A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. Typical surveys look at loose ridge and hip tiles and plant growth and moss on the roof, on tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs.
Villages like Ford End frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
Honest limits
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.
What we check

- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Valleys and parapet gutters
Questions from Ford End
How do I find out if my home in Ford End is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover smaller places like Ford End?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Ford End?
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, confirmed before anything is booked.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?
Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g, flown within the rules for the open category.
Drone roof surveys in Ford End: local notes
England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
Take an older house close to Church of St John the Evangelist: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Ford End
Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Vegetation in valleys and gutters
- Lifted or split lead flashings
If you look after a building such as Ford End Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- What the survey will not cover
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
Why get it checked now?
Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. They show the location and extent of each defect. Around Ford End, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

How it works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take an hour or two on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere as small as Ford End, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Note where any stains or damp appear
