Drone Roof Survey in Essex

Drone roof surveys across Essex: what to expect

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it is not safe. We are frequently asked to look into flashings that have come away and moss and weeds taking hold up top, across flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and fragile roofs.

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

What you’ll pay

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.

What’s near Colchester

Typical jobs here are in homes near Church of St Peter, Bull Meadow and The Bay And Say Public House and the streets around them. Nearby too are Colchester Sixth Form College (under half a mile north-west) and St John's Green Primary School (less than half a mile south). Colchester has its own railway station: Colchester Town station. Nearby you will also find Lion Walk (within half a mile south-east) and Essex County Hospital (less than half a mile south-west). The countryside around Colchester includes Westhouse Wood.

Drones, thermal imaging and roofs across Essex

Across Essex, the clearest thermal images come after a sunny day on a dry, calm roof. What it shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

Our area takes in slate-roofed London terraces, clay-tiled Weald houses, Essex weatherboarding and post-war new towns. Essex is part of that mix. Near the sea in Essex, roofs face stronger wind and salt-laden air, and metal fixings and lead suffer for it. Ridges and verges facing the sea are worth checking after every big storm.

Colchester: For businesses in and around places such as Lion Walk, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Essex

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Essex. To discuss a property or a block, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What happens if roof problems are left?

It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Will the report include photos?
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone

Checking the roof from ground level

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

Tips from our surveys

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Book early if you are near an airport

You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that isn’t clear.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.

What a survey costs

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings

Every price we give includes VAT. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. We confirm the exact price before booking.

Getting in touch

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can call 07833 053749 or send us an email to find out.

Essex questions

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.

Do drone rules differ in central London?

Central London has restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, where flights need permission from NATS. We check the airspace for your address and apply where needed.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.

What’s in the survey report?

Written findings with photographs, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, by urgency where it matters. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

How long does the visit take?

On site, it typically takes about one to two hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. That includes the checks before the drone goes up.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed.
