Cross End Drone Roof Survey
We carry out drone roof surveys in Cross End and the rest of Essex. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Standing water on a flat roof
About our drone roof survey in Cross End
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. A drone inspection, where it applies, is also part of our Premium Survey, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. If a drone will not help on your roof, we’ll say so. You get a written report with the close-up photos from the flight. If you’ve noticed damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below and tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs alike.
Older buildings in small places like Cross End may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

When you need someone else
It is useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
How the survey works
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older rural homes like those around Cross End can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Jot down any questions you want answered
Booking a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Drones, thermal imaging and Cross End roofs
The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. About 4.7 miles west lies Hedingham Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Cross End has been built on. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Parish Church of St John the Baptist, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Cross End is about 4 miles north-east of Halstead, in Essex. Surveys in Cross End work the same way as everywhere we cover: a proper look at whatever is safely visible, photos and a clear written report. Our area takes in places right across Essex. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.
Every address in CO9 is covered for drone roof surveys, from the main roads to the quietest streets. If you’re just outside Cross End, we cover Alphamstone (2 miles north-east), Lamarsh (2 miles north-east), Bures (3 miles east), Mount Bures (3 miles east) and White Colne (3 miles south). Further out, we also cover Colchester (10 miles south-east), Braintree (9 miles south-west), Witham (12 miles south), Camulodunum (9 miles south-east), Halstead (4 miles south-west) and Greenstead (11 miles south-east).

How we price drone roof surveys
To price your survey, we look at:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Helping us price your survey
We will usually ask about:
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

Why get it checked now?
A drone record gives you a baseline. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It’s useful for planning maintenance over the years. In a small place like Cross End, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
All our prices include VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your roof before booking.
Why us?
- Weekday and weekend surveys
- More than 5,000 surveys completed

Cross End: your questions answered
Is drone flying allowed in Cross End?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Cross End?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
How experienced are you?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
What if it rains on the day?
Light rain is usually fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In high wind or heavy rain, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Cross End
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.
Landlords, agents and building managers in Cross End and across Essex can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
