How a drone roof survey works in The Hythe

Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Common reasons to book are eroded pointing on a chimney stack and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, on fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and chimney stacks.

In smaller places like The Hythe, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from the ground misses.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Useful tips for The Hythe property owners

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

The Hythe: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like The Hythe?

Yes. The Hythe is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Are there drone restrictions around The Hythe?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

What if it rains on the day?

Light rain is typically fine; heavy rain and wind are different. Strong wind or a downpour can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.

Does someone need to be in?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when booking.

Flying and imaging in The Hythe

The Hythe lies within about 4 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

Take a building like Kendall Church of England Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you live in an older home near Church of St Leonard at the Hythe, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near The Hythe, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use.

The Hythe is about 1 mile south-east of Colchester, in Essex. We carry out drone roof surveys in The Hythe for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. The Hythe is one of the places in Essex where we work. We also survey roofs in Chelmsford.

What we look for on each type of roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

Chimney stacks

Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We’ll say if a specialist is needed.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer.

The survey, step by step

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect an hour or two on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Parking around The Hythe is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. Low roofs on bungalows can frequently be seen well from ground level, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent

Why act early in The Hythe

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photos, slope by slope. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Around The Hythe, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, especially where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Checking the roof from ground level

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
