Need a drone roof survey in Margaret Roding?

Margaret Roding: your questions answered

Is drone flying allowed in Margaret Roding?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Is my home in Margaret Roding listed or in a conservation area?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Do you look in the loft space?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.

Do you work in Margaret Roding?

Yes. We survey roofs in Margaret Roding and the rest of Essex, as part of our work across London and South East England. To book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

How quickly is the report sent?

That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.

About our drone roof survey in Margaret Roding

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it isn’t safe. We’re often asked to look into outlets choked with leaves and silt and eroded pointing on a chimney stack, across fragile roofs, chimney stacks and flat roofs on upper floors.

Some older homes in villages like Margaret Roding are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

After the visit, you get a written report with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What we cannot see

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs

Drones, thermal imaging and Margaret Roding roofs

Barrington Hall, about 4.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Margaret Roding. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons.

Common roof problems in Margaret Roding

Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. From ground level, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Wind damage high on the roof

If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Margaret, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Are they insured for the work?
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • How soon the report will arrive

What’s in a roof survey

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What we do, step by step

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Somewhere as small as Margaret Roding, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

How to book

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

Advice

How the survey changes by roof type

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.
