Newhall questions

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Newhall?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Do you cover smaller places like Newhall?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

How soon will I get the report?

Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when you book.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we will explain what’s needed.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

Will I get photos?

Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Drone roof survey in Newhall

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and fragile roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are chimney tops in poor condition and loose ridge and hip tiles.

Older cottages and houses around Newhall may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. They show the location and extent of each defect, which helps when you ask for quotes. In a smaller place like Newhall, wherever a roof is exposed, a loose ridge or flashing doesn’t stay loose for long. Each storm lifts it a little further.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both inc. VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

How the survey works

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. After that, we look at everything we can see safely. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. A visit to a smaller place like Newhall is no different on the day: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. It is useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Advice

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Newhall

Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Mary the Virgin, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Before you book anyone

  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Will the report include photos?
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What they won’t be able to tell you

What a good roof survey covers

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:

  • Height and safe access
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The shape of the roof and its details

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

Getting in touch

We will usually ask about:

  • Dates you’re working to, like exchange
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and the days you’d prefer.

For landlords and managing agents

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed in advance. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Flying and imaging in Newhall

Harlow, which Newhall is part of, is one of England’s post-war new towns. Many homes in the new towns date from the post-war decades, with concrete interlocking tiles, low-pitched roofs and flat-roofed garages and porches. Low pitches and flat-roofed additions are hard to see from ground level, so aerial and thermal views add detail. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Take a building like Newhall Primary Academy: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
