Roof by roof

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

On big single-ply roofs, the camera helps show where to take readings. That makes the survey more focused.

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Newhall

Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where applicable, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. If you’re worried about possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and wet areas near outlets and upstands, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In smaller places like Newhall, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. The parts you cannot see, like rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Can I check my roof myself?

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

How it works

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos. As for time on site, most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Homes around Newhall often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Before we arrive

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

Drones, thermal imaging and Newhall roofs

Harlow, which Newhall is part of, is one of England’s post-war new towns. Many homes in the new towns date from the post-war decades, with concrete interlocking tiles, low-pitched roofs and flat-roofed garages and porches. Low pitches and flat-roofed additions are hard to see from ground level, so aerial and thermal views add detail. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary the Virgin, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Newhall Primary Academy: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Newhall is about 1 mile east of Harlow, in Essex. Roofs in Newhall get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Essex. Newhall is one of the places in Essex we cover. There’s also a page for Chelmsford.

Surveys in CM17 and CM20 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your property is on Moss Lane, Petal Lane and Robin Lane or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Newhall sits on or near the A414 and A1025. Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Newhall

How do I find out if my home in Newhall is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Is Newhall within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.

When does the report arrive?

Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply call 07833 053749 or email us. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

Will the camera show exactly where the water is?

No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Practical tips

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • File the images with your roof records
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Before replacing a large flat roof, it is useful to know how much of it is actually wet. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you commit. Arranging work in a smaller place like Newhall is easier with notice than in an emergency. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT, and we’ll tell you which fits.
