Common roof problems in Mark Hall North

Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report, which suits a purchase that is moving quickly.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Cold areas below the roof
  • Wet areas near outlets and upstands
  • Water getting in at parapets and stacks

Take an older house close to St Andrew's Methodist Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • When you will get the report
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection

What’s in a roof survey

Thermal roof survey in Mark Hall North

We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. Premium reports are sent the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. If you are worried about missing or slipped insulation and patches of heat loss across the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.

Older cottages and houses around Mark Hall North may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

For landlords and managing agents

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.

Checking the roof from the ground

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

FAQs for Mark Hall North

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Mark Hall North?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Is Mark Hall North in the area you cover?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. The written report follows by email.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Which survey includes thermal imaging?

It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day.

Tips from our surveys

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Do not switch the heating off before the visit
  • Photograph damp patches with the date
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.

Why get it checked now?

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Around Mark Hall North, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, especially where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

The survey, step by step

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In a smaller place like Mark Hall North, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can frequently be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Tell us where we can park nearby

Drones, thermal imaging and Mark Hall North roofs

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and a good many post-war and modern estates besides. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

If you look after a building such as Tany's Dell Primary School and Nursery, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
