Steep slate and tile slopes

Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.

Ridges and hips

Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.

How a drone roof survey works in Beacon End

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies, along with structural analysis, a same-day report and an in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. We’ll tell you if a drone is not the right tool for your roof. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photographs. Common reasons to book are storm damage on steep or tall roofs and flat roofs on upper floors that hold water, on tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs.

Even in a smaller place like Beacon End, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Beacon End

Layer Marney Tower, about 4.2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Beacon End. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

If you run a business near Lion Walk, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Albright, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building such as Stanway Fiveways Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Beacon End is about 2 miles west of Camulodunum, in Essex. Roofs in Beacon End get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Essex. We cover towns and villages across Essex, large and small. We also survey roofs in Chelmsford.

Why act early in Beacon End

You can tackle the urgent items first. Blocked gutters on homes around Beacon End overflow and soak walls, particularly where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Questions from Beacon End

Is Beacon End within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Are there drone restrictions around Beacon End?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

How many surveys have you done?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

What happens next?

The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

What insurance do you have?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

How soon will I get the report?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.

What happens on the day

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a smaller place like Beacon End, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming

When you need someone else

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks

Checking the roof from the ground

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Make sure there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Book early if you are near an airport

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that is not clear.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, so small faults are dealt with early.
