Drone roof survey in Widford
A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it cannot see inside. Where there is safe access, we look in the roof space too, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. We survey chimney stacks, valleys and parapet gutters and fragile roofs, and people most often book us about standing water on a flat roof and debris building up in hidden gutters.
Older buildings in small places like Widford may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. You will see the good as well as the bad.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
- A structural engineer’s report
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Fragile roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
What happens on the day
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes an hour or two for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. Rural addresses near Widford can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Drones, thermal imaging and Widford roofs
Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Bond Street Chelmsford, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most. With Hylands about 0.4 miles west, the area around Widford has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.

Widford questions

When to book a survey in Widford
Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. You see the whole roof, not just the parts near an access point.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
Take a building like Mildmay Junior School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What you can safely check yourself
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Tips from our surveys
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Check the loft can be reached
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Book early if you are near an airport
- Let us know what you want to see
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Check insulation does not block the airflow.
