Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Basildon

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. A drone inspection, where applicable, is also part of our Premium Survey, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. We will tell you if a drone isn’t the right tool for your roof. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photos. We are frequently asked to look into coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, across tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs.

Conditions on the day matter: drones can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day with a dry roof and little wind. In Basildon, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part in when the visit happens, and it can move if conditions change. Some parts of a visit, such as a look in the loft, don’t depend on the weather.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Basildon

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Basildon?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

How do I find out if my home in Basildon is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The report is sent afterwards by email.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Do I need to be at home?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Roof by roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. It’s almost impossible to see from the ground, but it’s plain to see from the air.

What we do, step by step

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Jobs in Basildon might be a terraced house one day and a block of flats the next. Let us know the type of building and who can let us in, so the right access is in place on the day.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Should I look at the roof myself first?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Basildon

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. Surveys run on any day of the week, which can make access easier.

Airspace, weather and Basildon roofs

Basildon is within about 5 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.

Anyone responsible for a site like Ghyllgrove Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Shop and office owners around Eastgate Shopping Centre may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

What this survey can’t tell you

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs

What we are asked to look at in Basildon

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.

People normally book a survey after spotting one of these:

  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Lifted or split lead flashings

Take an older house close to St Martin of Tours: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Their report turnaround times
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos
