Different roofs, different checks

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. Their condition is noted in the report.

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Drone roof survey in Broomfield

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we’ll say so. Common reasons to book are moss building up on slopes and in gutters and flashings that have come away, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs.

Around Broomfield, plenty of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images frequently show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from the ground.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible.

Drones, thermal imaging and Broomfield roofs

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

If you run a business near Bond Street Chelmsford, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary the Virgin, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. With Hylands about 4.5 miles south, the area around Broomfield has a long history. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Broomfield is about 2 miles north of Chelmsford, in Essex. Whether the building in Broomfield is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Broomfield is one of the places in Essex we cover.

Drone roof surveys in CM1 and CM3 are booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on Mandeville Way, Court Road and Gernon Close or a nearby road, we can help. Neighbouring places we cover for drone roof surveys include Little Waltham (1 mile north), Minnow End (1 mile north), Breeds (1 mile north-west), Patching (2 miles south) and Great Waltham (2 miles north-west). Larger places within reach include Basildon (14 miles south), Braintree (9 miles north-east), Harlow (15 miles west), Brentwood (12 miles south-west), Maldon (10 miles east) and Billericay (10 miles south).

What happens on the day

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes about 1–2 hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. In a smaller place like Broomfield, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

Advice

What you can safely check yourself

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

FAQs for Broomfield

Is Broomfield within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is my home in Broomfield listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

No, the camera is kept on your roof. Next door’s windows and gardens are kept out of shot as far as possible, and flights are kept short. It’s useful to tell neighbours beforehand.

Is your drone operator registered?

Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We use a sub-250g drone.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Strong wind or heavy rain stops a flight. Whether we can fly depends on the conditions on the day. If we can’t fly, we’ll arrange another day or inspect by other means.

What does a roof survey cost?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your survey before booking. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

How we price drone roof surveys

Prices vary from roof to roof, for these reasons:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Which survey package you book
  • The roof’s overall size

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Helping us price your survey

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to let us know:

  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof

Our phone lines are open seven days a week. To book or ask a question, call 07833 053749 or email us.
