Drone roof survey in Clatterford End: what you get
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. Typical surveys look at cracked mortar along the ridge and worn lead at chimneys and walls, on flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Clatterford End, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

What happens on the day
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older rural homes like those around Clatterford End can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
- We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Advice
How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. A drone keeps everyone off them.
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
Why act early in Clatterford End
Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photographs of every part we can see. You can tackle the urgent items first. In a place like Clatterford End, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Clatterford End
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Clatterford End?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover smaller places like Clatterford End?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
What will the report tell me?
Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
What does a roof survey cost?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included.

When to book a survey in Clatterford End
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until water overflows inside. From above, they’re easy to see.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Lifted or split lead flashings
If you live in an older home near Greensted Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
What to check before booking
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Are they insured for the work?
What this survey cannot tell you
No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- A structural engineer’s report
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
