What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Roof area
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

About our drone roof survey in Tendring Heath

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it cannot see under the coverings or into the loft. Where there’s safe access, we look in the loft space too, since that’s where leaks and condensation often show first. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. If you’re worried about coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and vegetation in valleys and gutters, we can find out what’s behind it.

In a small place like Tendring Heath, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Why act early in Tendring Heath

Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photographs of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can tackle the urgent items first. Older cottages and farmhouses around Tendring Heath can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Tendring Heath

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Tendring Heath. To discuss a property or a block, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it as you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

How it works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take between one and two hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Around Tendring Heath, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Make sure there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Check the loft can be reached

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Make sure insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is usually out of view. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

Tendring Heath questions

Do you cover smaller places like Tendring Heath?

Yes, Tendring Heath is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Is my home in Tendring Heath listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

When does the report arrive?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

How much is a survey?

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your survey before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Drones, thermal imaging and Tendring Heath roofs

Tendring Heath lies within about 4 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Historic houses such as Thorpe Hall, about 4.2 miles south-east, show how far back building around Tendring Heath goes. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Tendring Heath is about 7 miles north of Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex. Tendring Heath gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful look at what can be seen safely, photographs and a clear written report. Tendring Heath is one of the towns and villages in Essex where we work for drone roof surveys. Our Chelmsford page covers surveys nearby.

Postcode districts we cover here for drone roof surveys: CO16. You’ll find streets like Heath Road and Stones Green Road, and we cover them all. Close by, we survey roofs in Tendring Green (1 mile south-east), Tendring (2 miles south), Stones Green (2 miles east), Weeley (3 miles south) and Oak Corner (3 miles east). We also work in nearby towns such as Colchester (9 miles west), Clacton-on-Sea (7 miles south), Harwich (7 miles east), Camulodunum (10 miles west), Greenstead (7 miles west) and Wivenhoe (6 miles west).
