DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Tendring
Prices start from £400, including VAT. A drone inspection, where applicable, is also part of our Premium Survey, along with structural analysis, a same-day report and an in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. If a drone won’t help on your roof, we will say so. You get a written report with the close-up photos from the flight. Common reasons to book are chimney tops in poor condition and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, across tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and flat roofs on upper floors.
Somewhere as small as Tendring, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You will see the good as well as the bad.

What we look for on each type of roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. We check outlets and photograph any build-up.
Large commercial roofs
Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.
How it works
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes an hour or two for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Around Tendring, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Getting ready for the survey
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Drone roof surveys in Tendring: local notes
Tendring is within about 4 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. The wider area around Tendring has a long history of building, with Thorpe Hall about 2.8 miles south-east. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Take an older house close to Church of St Edmund: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Tendring
Is Tendring within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is drone flying allowed in Tendring?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
What we are asked to look at in Tendring
Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.
Common reasons to book include:
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
- Flashings that have come away
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Tendring Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Before you book anyone
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What follow-up you get after the report
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
Why act early in Tendring
From ground level, you are guessing about most of a tall roof. Close-up photos show what’s really there, slope by slope. It is far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. For an older or listed building in a place like Tendring, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
Our price is from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.
