Why act early in Tendring

Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Check the wording and tell your insurer as soon as you can. An independent report can follow. In a place like Tendring, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

How a storm damage roof report works in Tendring

We inspect the roof from wherever it can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and higher points, from the loft space and from the roof where it’s safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. We note any part we couldn’t see. The report, with photos, is yours to pass to your insurer. We’re often asked to look into damaged gutters and fascias and holes or cracks caused by debris, on chimney stacks, flashings and ridges and hips.

Somewhere as small as Tendring, older roofs have often been repaired many times. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it’s worth finding the cause soon.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to.

What we look for on each type of roof

Flat roof coverings

Debris blown onto a flat roof can puncture the covering or block outlets. We record what we find.

Chimney stacks

High winds can loosen pots, cowls and aerials on stacks. The report notes any damage to the stack.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Storm damage roof reports around Tendring

Tendring is within about 4 miles of the coast. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording, and many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, though it varies. About 2.8 miles south-east lies Thorpe Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Tendring has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

Landlords with a home close to Weeley station may find that finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. If you look after a building such as Tendring Primary School, a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you live in an older home near Church of St Edmund, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Tendring is about 5 miles north of Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex. If you are in Tendring, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: get in touch, agree the price and pick a day. Our area takes in places right across Essex, large and small. Chelmsford is in our area too.

All of CO16 is covered for storm damage roof reports, from the main roads to the quietest streets. If you are just outside Tendring, we cover Weeley (1 mile south), Tendring Green (1 mile north), Far Thorpe Green (1 mile south-east), Tendring Heath (2 miles north) and Thorpe Green (2 miles east). Within a short drive, we also cover Colchester (9 miles west), Clacton-on-Sea (5 miles south), Harwich (8 miles north-east), Camulodunum (10 miles west), Greenstead (8 miles west) and Wivenhoe (7 miles west).

Common questions in Tendring

Is the coastal weather around Tendring hard on roofs?

Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.

Is my home in Tendring listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Raise it with your insurer first. If it is not resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

How long will you be at the property?

It typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. The report follows by email.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

What we can’t see

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • A price for the repairs
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • A decision on your insurance claim

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flashings
  • Ridges and hips
  • Chimney stacks

How it works

You don’t need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Tendring often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
