Airspace, weather and Little Maplestead roofs

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.

Take an older house close to St John the Baptist Church: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. If you look after a building like The Ramsey Academy, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. Hedingham Castle, about 2.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Little Maplestead. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Drone roof survey in Little Maplestead: what you get

Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, fragile roofs and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are debris building up in hidden gutters and moss building up on slopes and in gutters.

Some older homes in villages like Little Maplestead are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Little Maplestead: your questions answered

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Little Maplestead?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Is my home in Little Maplestead listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Will you check the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

What we can’t see

Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks

Leave it or get it looked at?

Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller. Older and listed buildings around Little Maplestead may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

What we do, step by step

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect an hour or two for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Little Maplestead often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Preparing for the visit

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Getting in touch

There’s no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:

  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

Getting a price is simple: just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and give us a few details about the property and we will point you to the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

How the survey changes by roof type

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them.

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is normally out of view. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
