Practical tips

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off

Your report arrives by email, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and people most often book us about slipped or missing slates on a high roof and wind damage high on the roof.

Some older homes in villages like East Mersea are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What we cannot see

A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs

What we do, step by step

Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a hamlet or village like East Mersea, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Book a survey

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Advice

Can I check my roof myself?

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

FAQs for East Mersea

How do I find out if my home in East Mersea is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Will you come out to East Mersea?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Are you structural engineers?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Does the drone show the underside of the roof?

No. The drone photographs the outer surfaces, but it cannot see under the coverings. We look in the loft from inside where it’s safe.

What does the report include?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.

What if it is windy or raining on the day?

The flight waits for better weather. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so a new date is agreed with you, or look from other safe viewpoints if you’d rather.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in East Mersea?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Why get it checked now?

Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey does not create new problems. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.

Flying and imaging in East Mersea

East Mersea lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Edmund King and Martyr, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. Whatever the street in East Mersea, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.
