Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in East Mersea
People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way with photos and clear recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. We are often asked to look into hoppers and outlets full of debris and soffits marked by water, on downpipes, fascias and soffits and eaves gutters.
Older buildings in small places like East Mersea may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What happens on the day
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Rural addresses near East Mersea can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

When you need someone else
A survey is a careful look at the gutter, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- The inside of buried drains
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
- Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely

What we’re asked to look at in East Mersea
Gutter brackets work loose or corrode with age. A gutter full of wet debris is heavy and the extra load drags the gutter down. Lose the fall and water gathers in the dip, then overflows.
We’re frequently asked to look at:
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
If you own a rental within reach of Alresford station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
Before you book anyone
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
Your questions about gutter surveys in East Mersea
Do you cover smaller places like East Mersea?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Does being near the coast affect roofs in East Mersea?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch, and East Mersea is within about 2 miles of the coast.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
How soon will I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in East Mersea
East Mersea lies within about 2 miles of the sea, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Older buildings in Essex often have clay tiles and weatherboarding, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Edmund King and Martyr, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
East Mersea is about 7 miles west of Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex. Surveys in East Mersea work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. East Mersea is one of the places in Essex we cover for gutter surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.
Every address in CO5 is covered for gutter surveys. If you need a gutter survey at a property on East Road, Shop Lane and Broman's Lane or a nearby road, we can survey it. Close by, we survey roofs in Barrow Hill (2 miles west), Brightlingsea (2 miles north-east), Point Clear (2 miles east), West Mersea (3 miles west) and Lee-over-Sands (3 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Colchester (8 miles north-west), Clacton-on-Sea (7 miles east), Maldon (14 miles west), Witham (15 miles west), Harwich (15 miles north-east) and Camulodunum (8 miles north-west).
Landmarks near East Mersea

Why get it checked now?
When a valley or parapet gutter blocks, the water has nowhere safe to go. It can overflow into the building normally during the worst downpours. Having them checked before autumn and winter makes sense. Outbuildings and barns around East Mersea are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.
