Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Brightlingsea

From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see inside. Where there’s safe access, we look in the loft space too, since that is where leaks and condensation often show first. Together, the two give a fuller picture. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. Where the loft can’t be reached safely, we note it. If you’ve noticed lead work pulling away at abutments and storm damage on steep or tall roofs, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Around Brightlingsea, a good many roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day. Even so, a close-up image frequently shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from ground level misses.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. We record what we find with photos.

Ridges and hips

The ridge takes wind from both sides. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.

Airspace, weather and Brightlingsea roofs

Brightlingsea is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Brightlingsea Primary School and Nursery, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Brightlingsea is about 5 miles west of Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Brightlingsea can all book drone roof surveys, with a written report and photographs every time. Our area takes in places right across Essex. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.

What we do, step by step

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. A visit to Brightlingsea is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

When you need someone else

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks

Before and after the survey

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. Blocked gutters on homes around Brightlingsea overflow and soak walls, especially where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Brightlingsea

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.

We’re often asked to look at:

  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Wind damage high on the roof

Take an older house close to Church of St James: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • When you will get the report
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one

Brightlingsea questions

Is my home in Brightlingsea listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is Brightlingsea within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

Not as part of the drone survey, which is about close-up photos. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

We take care around neighbouring homes. We photograph your roof, not your neighbours’ property. It’s worth telling neighbours about the flight.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.
