About our drone roof survey in Point Clear

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. We are frequently asked to look into chimney tops in poor condition and lead work pulling away at abutments, across flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Some older homes in villages like Point Clear are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

How the survey changes by roof type

Steep slate and tile slopes

Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.

Checking the roof from the ground

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

The survey, step by step

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Around Point Clear, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Booking your survey

Some details help us recommend the right survey and price. When you contact us, let us know:

  • Where water is showing inside, if it is

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access

Leave it or get it looked at?

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.

Questions from Point Clear

How do I find out if my home in Point Clear is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Will you come out to Point Clear?

Yes, Point Clear is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Will you photograph next door’s garden?

We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on neighbouring gardens or windows. We only survey what the owner has asked us to. If your roof is shared, it helps to tell your neighbours about the visit.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We’ll talk about access as you book.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

Flying and imaging in Point Clear

Point Clear lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

Take a building like Colne Community School and College: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St James, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Point Clear is about 5 miles west of Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex. Surveys in Point Clear work the same way as everywhere we cover: a proper look at what can be seen safely, photos and a clear written report. Point Clear is one of the towns and villages in Essex where we work. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.
