Drone roof surveys in Thorpe Cross

About our drone roof survey in Thorpe Cross

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. If you’ve noticed slates or tiles shifted by high winds and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and fragile roofs alike.

Older buildings in small places like Thorpe Cross may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Different roofs, different checks

Large commercial roofs

Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically, so nothing is skipped.

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from ground level. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

How the survey works

We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Around Thorpe Cross, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Thorpe Cross questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Thorpe Cross?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you cover smaller places like Thorpe Cross?

Yes, Thorpe Cross is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Are you registered with the CAA?

Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We use a sub-250g drone.

Are you structural engineers?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Does your drone take thermal images?

No, the drone survey is photographic. Thermal imaging is a separate check in the Premium Survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.

How long will you be at the property?

Typically, it takes between one and two hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. That includes checking the site and the weather before take-off.

Can you fly a drone near an airport?

That depends on where the roof is. Inside a flight restriction zone, we need permission first. Book early if you think you may be affected.

Drone roof surveys around Thorpe Cross

Thorpe Cross is within about 2 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

With Thorpe Hall about 0.8 miles west, the area around Thorpe Cross has a long history. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. If you look after a building such as Rolph CofE Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

What you can safely check yourself

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

Why it is worth a survey now in Thorpe Cross

On a tall building, problems are frequently found only when water comes in. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. A drone survey finds them sooner. For older village homes like those around Thorpe Cross, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

  • Package prices that include VAT

For landlords and managing agents

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.

Common roof problems in Thorpe Cross

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are frequently invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots

If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Michael, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
