What happens if roof problems are left?

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. Close-up photos show what’s really there, slope by slope. It’s far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. With lower homes, common in places like Abbey Field, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

How a drone roof survey works in Abbey Field

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks, and the problems we are asked to look at most are cracked mortar along the ridge and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below.

In smaller places like Abbey Field, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day. Close-up images frequently show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Common questions in Abbey Field

Are there drone restrictions around Abbey Field?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Will you come out to Abbey Field?

Yes. Abbey Field is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

What’s in the survey report?

Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

How long is the visit?

It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. We’ll confirm the timing as you book.

Does the weather affect the survey?

A survey can typically go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we’ll agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when booking.

Useful tips for Abbey Field property owners

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Make sure the loft can be reached
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace

You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that is not clear.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

What you can safely check yourself

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

What happens on the day

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. In a smaller place like Abbey Field, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where applicable.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before the survey

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Flying and imaging in Abbey Field

Abbey Field lies within about 5 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

Anyone responsible for a site like Montgomery Junior School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you live in an older home near St Michael's Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. Hotels and guest houses near Abbey Field can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition.
