What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • Roof area

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Getting in touch

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • What kind of property and roof it is

To get a price for drone roof surveys in Hockley, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. The address, the type of property and what you need to know help us price the survey accurately.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hockley

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. We survey chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and people most often book us about flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots.

Older cottages and houses around Hockley may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

The survey, step by step

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. With a bit of garden around a house, as there frequently is around Hockley, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Hockley

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Airspace, weather and Hockley roofs

Hockley is within about 5 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Hockley is about 3 miles from London Southend Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly.

Take an older house close to Emmanuel Church Hall: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Hockley is about 2 miles east of Rayleigh, in Essex. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Hockley can all book drone roof surveys. Hockley is one of the places in Essex we cover. Chelmsford is in our area too.

We survey roofs across the SS5 postcode area for drone roof surveys. Whether your property is on Station Road, Church Road and Eldon Way or a nearby road, we can survey it. Nearby, we also carry out drone roof surveys in Ashingdon (1 mile east), Brandy Hole (2 miles north-west), South Fambridge (2 miles north-east), Hullbridge (2 miles north-west) and North Fambridge (3 miles north). Within a short drive, we also cover Chelmsford (12 miles north-west), Basildon (9 miles west), Brentwood (15 miles west), Maldon (9 miles north), Canvey Island (6 miles south-west) and Billericay (10 miles west).

Leave it or get it looked at?

Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Arranging work in a smaller place like Hockley is easier with notice than in an emergency. A survey gives you that notice.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the exact price before booking.

Hockley questions

Do you cover smaller places like Hockley?

Yes, Hockley is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Hockley is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

What insurance do you have?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

How long does the visit take?

Allow about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. We will give you an idea of timing as you book.

Can you fly a drone near an airport?

Only with the right permission. Confirmed flight restriction zones include Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted, Luton and Southampton, among others, where the airport or air traffic control must give permission first. If permission is not given, the roof is inspected from other safe viewpoints.

Before and after the survey

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Hockley?

Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose

If you look after a building like Greensward Academy, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • What the survey will not cover
