Storm damage roof reports for Hockley homes and businesses

What we look for on each type of roof

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. Each area is photographed and described.

Chimney stacks

Flashings around stacks can lift in strong winds. We photograph any we find.

Storm damage roof report in Hockley

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We aren’t loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. We survey gutters and fascias, flashings and flat roofs, and people most often book us about gutters pulled loose in the wind and holes or cracks caused by debris.

Around Hockley, chimneys on older homes are a common source of leaks, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it isn’t always obvious where it starts. The stack, its flashings and the loft space beside it are all worth checking.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

What happens on the day

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. A visit to Hockley is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Advice

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.

What you can safely check yourself

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.

Questions from Hockley

Is Hockley within the area you cover?

Yes. Hockley is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

How do I find out if my home in Hockley is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Record the date and any damage inside as well.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

That’s not something we can promise. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.

What affects the price in Hockley

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Which survey package you book

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.

What to let us know when you get in touch

To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:

  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

To get a price for storm damage roof reports in Hockley, ring 07833 053749 or email us. The address, the type of property and what you want to find out help us give you an accurate price.

Wind, rain and roofs in Hockley

The coast is about 5 miles or less from Hockley, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.

Landlords with a home close to Hockley station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Living close to Marylands Nature Reserve is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you live in an older home near Emmanuel Church Hall, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Hockley is about 2 miles east of Rayleigh, in Essex. Hockley gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful look at whatever is safely visible, photographs and a clear written report. Hockley is one of the towns and villages in Essex we cover. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.

We survey roofs across SS5 for storm damage roof reports. Local streets include Station Road, Church Road and Eldon Way, all of which we cover. Close by, we survey roofs in Ashingdon (1 mile east), Brandy Hole (2 miles north-west), South Fambridge (2 miles north-east), Hullbridge (2 miles north-west) and North Fambridge (3 miles north). Within a short drive, we also cover Chelmsford (12 miles north-west), Basildon (9 miles west), Brentwood (15 miles west), Maldon (9 miles north), Canvey Island (6 miles south-west) and Billericay (10 miles west).

Landmarks near Hockley

Around Hockley, our work takes us to homes and buildings near The Bull Public House, Marylands Nature Reserve and Plumberow Primary Academy and the streets around them. Hockley has its own railway station: Hockley station. Nearby you will also find Southend University Hospital (3.7 miles south) and Rayleigh Castle (2.5 miles south-west). The countryside around Hockley includes Blue House Farm.

What this survey cannot tell you

Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • How your policy defines a storm
  • Acting for you with the insurer

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
