Brentwood: your questions answered
Do you cover Brentwood?
Yes, Brentwood is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
What do I need to do before a survey in Brentwood?
The main thing is access, inside and out, plus somewhere to park in Brentwood. It also helps to know about any leaks or earlier repairs.
Do you act for me with my insurer?
No. We’re not loss adjusters, and we do not negotiate claims. We provide an independent record of the roof, which you can pass to your insurer.
How experienced are you?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
How do I book a survey in Brentwood?
To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Brentwood
Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there’s access, and the roof itself where that is safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. If part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. You get a written report with photos to give to your insurer. We survey flat roofs, slate and tile slopes and chimney stacks, and people most frequently book us about water coming in after the storm and damaged pots on the stack.
Strong winds lift loose tiles, slates and ridge pieces in towns like Brentwood as anywhere. What counts as a storm depends on your policy; many use gusts of around 55 mph. Photos and a written account help you show what happened. Policies typically exclude wear and tear, which is why the age of the damage matters.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports
We confirm the price for the job before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- How big the roof is
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.
Booking your survey
If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Useful tips for Brentwood property owners
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
- Note the date and time you first saw the damage
- Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
- Read your policy wording on storm damage
The insurer might appoint a loss adjuster. You will have your own independent record to refer to.
Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

Storm damage roof reports around Brentwood
Ingatestone Hall, about 4.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Brentwood. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, alongside plenty of post-war and newer estates. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. If you let a flat or house near Brentwood station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away.

- What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
- Acting for you with the insurer
- How your policy defines a storm

What this survey covers
- Ridges and hips
- Slate and tile slopes
- Flashings
- Gutters and fascias
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs
What you can safely check yourself
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Common roof problems in Brentwood
Roofs that were already worn are more likely to suffer in a storm. Corroded nails on slate roofs, worn mortar on ridges and old flashings can all give way. Our report notes both the storm damage and any older wear.
Problems we come across often include:
- Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
- Ridge tiles that have come loose
- Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
- Stains appearing after strong winds
If you live near a park such as Weald Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
What to check before booking
- When you will get the report
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
How it works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In Brentwood, many roofs join a neighbour’s, so we look at what can be seen of the shared parts from your side. Let us know about any known leaks, past repairs or building work as you book, so time on site goes where it’s needed.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
How to prepare
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
