About our roof survey in Brentwood
There is no single reason to have a roof surveyed. Some have seen a mark on a ceiling or bits of tile in the garden, others want a check before selling or after years without one. Whatever the reason, the survey works the same way: a careful look, then a clear written report. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, so finding a time is rarely difficult. If you’ve noticed loose ridge or hip tiles and slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles, we can find out what’s behind it.
Most homes in a town like Brentwood are houses, so the roof is typically the owner’s to look after. Small faults, like a cracked ridge, a slipped tile or a blocked gutter, are cheaper to deal with early. A roof report gives you a list of what needs doing and how soon, whether you live in the house or let it. Photographs show you exactly what was seen, even on parts you can’t reach yourself.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

How it works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It normally takes between one and two hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a home in Brentwood, the main things we need are a way into the loft, a route to the back garden and somewhere to park. If you will not be there yourself, let us know who will let us in.
- You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- Outside, we inspect from the ground, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- Inside, we check the loft space where there is safe access.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Before we arrive
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Your questions about roof surveys in Brentwood
How do I find out if my home in Brentwood is listed?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Brentwood in the area you cover?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and Brentwood is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and tell us about the property.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will explain what’s needed.
What’s covered in a roof inspection?
We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, along with the loft where it’s safe. The report includes photos and recommendations.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
How the survey changes by roof type
Clay plain and peg tiles
Clay tiles commonly last 50 years or more. We check for cracked, slipped and missing tiles, and for spalling where the surface has flaked.
Natural slate
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have slate roofs. Widespread slipping typically points to corroded nails, and we say how widespread it looks.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Brentwood
Before you put a home on the market, it is useful to know the roof’s condition. You’ll know what a buyer’s survey might pick up. Around Brentwood, water from a roof defect often goes unseen for a while, such as the loft insulation, the top of a wall or the roof timbers. By the time a stain appears on a ceiling, there’s more to put right.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
Why us?
- An independent view of the roof
- Package prices that include VAT
- Drone flown under a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Thermal imaging and drones used where they help
What a roof survey looks like in Brentwood
Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. In Essex, older buildings are frequently clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and plenty of post-war and modern estates besides. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. If you look after a building such as Becket Keys Church of England School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. Trees in and around Weald Country Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

What we can’t see
No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
- A promise that the roof won’t leak in future
- Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets

Tips from our surveys
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Ask about a flat roof on an extension or garage too
- Tell us about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
- Keep the report with your property records
- Do not climb onto the roof yourself
Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some faults need dealing with soon, while others can wait for planned work. It makes the next steps much clearer.
Have gutters and valleys cleared regularly, ideally after the leaves have fallen. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.
