Storm damage roof reports near Doddinghurst

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Doddinghurst

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Falling branches can cause damage too. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. We are often asked to look into gaps where slates or tiles have gone and damaged pots on the stack, on flashings, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias.

Somewhere as small as Doddinghurst, older roofs have often been repaired many times. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you are thinking of an insurance claim. We look at whatever is safely visible and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

How the survey works

You don’t need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. For a village or hamlet like Doddinghurst, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows and from the loft space where it is safe.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Before we arrive

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

It’s useful to know what a survey won’t do before you book:

  • How your policy defines a storm
  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Areas we can’t see safely

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Wind, rain and roofs in Doddinghurst

The wider area around Doddinghurst has a long history of building, with Ingatestone Hall about 3.8 miles east. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. If you own a rental within reach of Shenfield station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Doddinghurst Infant School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

FAQs for Doddinghurst

Is my home in Doddinghurst listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Will you come out to Doddinghurst?

Yes. Doddinghurst is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Safely, from the ground or a window. Do not use a ladder or go onto the roof. Binoculars can help you see damage from below and we’ll inspect the rest from safe positions.

How many surveys have you done?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

We can’t say whether a claim will be paid. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

Will my insurer pay for an old roof?

Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. The claim decision is your insurer’s.

What’s the best way to book?

It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or email us. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we will point you to the right survey. Surveys run on any day of the week.

Tips from our surveys

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

Roof by roof

Ridge and hip tiles

The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. We record any that have lifted, cracked or come away.

Clay and concrete tiles

Older tiles held only by nibs, without nails or clips, can lift more easily. We record what we can see of the fixings.
