Storm damage roof report in Chelmsford

A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We are not loss adjusters and can’t say whether a claim will be paid. If you’ve noticed roofs hit by falling trees and ridge tiles that have come loose, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

With roofs of every age and type in a place like Chelmsford, there are many ways for water to get in: failed flashings, blocked valleys, slipped slates, worn mortar, overflowing gutters or a split felt roof. The stain inside is rarely right under the cause, which is why the inside and outside are looked at together. Moisture readings, taken alongside a close look outside, help track where the water has been.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

How the survey works

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photographs, emailed to you. As for time on site, most surveys take an hour or two at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a place the size of Chelmsford, the building you want surveyed may be a house, a flat above a shop or a whole block. Let us know which it is and who controls access, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there’s access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Advice

Roof by roof

Ridge and hip tiles

The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. We record any that have lifted, cracked or come away.

Clay and concrete tiles

A missing tile lets rain reach the underlay. Each gap is recorded with a photo.

Useful tips for Chelmsford property owners

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Take photos of stains and damp inside
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that doesn’t resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.

After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

Questions from Chelmsford

Do you carry out roof surveys in Chelmsford?

Yes, Chelmsford is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the property, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Is there anything to prepare before you come to Chelmsford?

Very little. Keep pets out of the way, leave side gates unlocked and have any old roof paperwork handy.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or email us.

How long does the survey take?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows by email.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

Each policy has its own definition. Many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but check your own wording.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

Why act early in Chelmsford

Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Check the wording and tell your insurer as soon as you can. An independent report can follow. Whatever the age of a roof in Chelmsford, small defects only grow if they’re left. What starts as a cracked flashing or a blocked outlet becomes wet timber and stained ceilings in time.

Chelmsford roofs and the weather

Older buildings in Essex often have clay tiles and weatherboarding, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. With Hylands about 2.8 miles south-west, Chelmsford sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

Homes near green spaces such as Chelmer Valley Riverside can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Trinity Road Primary School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. Landlords with a home close to Chelmsford station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.
