Hullbridge: your questions answered
Is drone flying allowed in Hullbridge?
Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
How do I find out if my home in Hullbridge is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.
What happens after the survey?
The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
How soon will I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
About our drone roof survey in Hullbridge
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it isn’t safe. If you’ve noticed flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and chimney tops in poor condition, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs alike.
Older cottages and houses around Hullbridge may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Tips that help
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Tell us about any leaks or concerns
Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.

Why act early in Hullbridge
Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey does not create new problems. Blocked gutters on homes around Hullbridge overflow and soak walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £400, including VAT.

Drones, thermal imaging and Hullbridge roofs
Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and a good many post-war and modern estates besides. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.
For an older house near a landmark such as St Thomas' Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. If you look after a building such as Riverside Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
The top of a stack is typically out of view. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates frequently point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
When you need someone else
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
How the survey works
We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Parking around Hullbridge is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
Booking a survey

Advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
