Hullbridge Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal roof surveys in Hullbridge, with over 20 years’ experience behind it. You get a clear report with photographs.
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Cold areas below the roof
How a thermal roof survey works in Hullbridge
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We survey loft conversions, commercial roofs and ceilings below the roof, and the problems we are asked to look at most are damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.
Around Hullbridge, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photograph. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Hullbridge
Before replacing a large flat roof, it is useful to know how much of it is actually wet. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you commit. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Hullbridge, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Useful tips for Hullbridge property owners
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
You also get an in-person consultation with a Premium Survey, so you can go through the images with us. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
When you need someone else
It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before booking:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
What we do, step by step
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Homes around Hullbridge often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
Before the survey
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached

Advice
Common questions in Hullbridge
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hullbridge?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Do you cover smaller places like Hullbridge?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
No, not on its own. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.
Flying and imaging in Hullbridge
Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list.
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Thomas' Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Anyone responsible for a site like Riverside Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
