How a drone roof survey works in Margaretting
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We are frequently asked to look into hidden gutters full of leaves and chimney tops in poor condition, on valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and flat roofs on upper floors.
Some older homes in villages like Margaretting are listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Drone roof surveys around Margaretting
Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, alongside plenty of post-war and newer estates. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Hylands, about 1.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Margaretting. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.
Anyone responsible for a site like Anglo European School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What we are asked to look at in Margaretting
The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Margaret, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- What the survey won’t cover
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- What insurance they carry
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
How the survey works
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take an hour or two at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere as small as Margaretting, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
- We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Getting in touch
If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:
- Anything about access we should know
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.
Roof by roof
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.
Chimney stacks
Chimney tops are hard to see from ground level. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.
What you can safely check yourself
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Honest limits
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.
What we check

- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
Margaretting: your questions answered
Is my home in Margaretting listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you come out to Margaretting?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Are you registered with the CAA?
Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Are you insured?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Does the drone show the underside of the roof?
No. It sees only the outer surfaces. Leaks, damp timbers and condensation often show first from inside, so we inspect the loft space as well where access is safe.
