How a drone roof survey works in Boxted
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. Typical surveys look at eroded pointing on a chimney stack and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, on large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks.
Somewhere as small as Boxted, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings

- Building height and the viewpoints available
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Boxted questions
Is Boxted within the area you cover?
Yes. Boxted is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
How do I find out if my home in Boxted is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Are you registered with the CAA?
Yes. Our registration covers a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g, flown within the rules for the open category.
What’s in the report?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photographs throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
Does the drone show the underside of the roof?
No. A drone shows the outside surfaces of the roof in close detail, but it cannot see under the coverings. Where there is safe access, we check the loft space from inside.
Will the drone film my neighbours?
We take care around neighbouring homes. We photograph your roof, not your neighbours’ property. Letting neighbours know in advance helps.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Do you need a drone roof survey in Boxted?
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Leaves, silt and plant growth build up unseen, until water overflows inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
Look out for signs like these:
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is VAT included in the price?
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Check the loft can be reached
- Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
- Let us know the exact address when you book
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

Checking the roof from the ground
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
The survey, step by step
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere like Boxted needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.
- You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
Booking a survey

Advice
Roof by roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. We photograph them closely.
