Drone roof survey in Workhouse Hill: what you get

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. If you’ve noticed coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs alike.

Older buildings in small places like Workhouse Hill may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

When you need someone else

We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.

Workhouse Hill: your questions answered

Are there drone restrictions around Workhouse Hill?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

How do I find out if my home in Workhouse Hill is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Normally, if there is one and it can be reached safely. The loft space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Can you survey in bad weather?

It depends on the weather and the survey. In high wind or heavy rain, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Airspace, weather and Workhouse Hill roofs

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Boxted St Peter's Church of England School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Castle House lies about 4 miles east, so building around Workhouse Hill goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Workhouse Hill is about 4 miles north of Colchester, in Essex. We cover Workhouse Hill and the rest of Essex, as part of our work across London and the South East. Our Essex coverage includes Workhouse Hill. There is also a page for Chelmsford.

We also cover the places around Workhouse Hill: Boxted (1 mile east), Boxted Cross (1 mile east), Langham (2 miles east), Hornestreet (2 miles east) and Thorington Street (2 miles north-east). When to book a survey in Workhouse Hill

Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack

Take an older house close to Church of St Peter: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

What to check before booking

  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Which limits apply to the survey

What a good roof survey covers

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

The survey, step by step

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere as small as Workhouse Hill, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Check pets are kept safely away

Checking the roof from ground level

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Why get it checked now?

Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. For older village homes like those around Workhouse Hill, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
