Drone roof surveys in Elder Street: local notes

In Essex, older buildings are frequently clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

For any home in Elder Street, it is the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right. With Horham Hall about 3.5 miles south, the area around Elder Street has a long history. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Elder Street is about 3 miles south-east of Saffron Walden, in Essex. We survey roofs in Elder Street and the rest of Essex. Elder Street is one of the towns and villages in Essex where we work. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.

Drone roof survey in Elder Street

Drones need reasonable weather. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We are often asked to look into cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and ponding and splits on a high flat roof, on flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and large and complex roofs.

In a small place like Elder Street, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

What happens on the day

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where it applies. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a small place like Elder Street, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

How to book

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from ground level or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Advice

Practical tips

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.

How the survey changes by roof type

Valleys and parapet gutters

Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Ridges and hips

The ridge takes wind from both sides. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • The size of the roof
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • What’s prompted the survey

Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email, let us know about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Elder Street

Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant, which helps when budgeting.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.

Questions from Elder Street

How do I find out if my home in Elder Street is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you cover smaller places like Elder Street?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

What does a roof survey cost?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your survey before booking. For a price, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.

How long will you be at the property?

On site, it typically takes between one and two hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Time for the pre-flight checks is included.
