Tarpots: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Tarpots?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Tarpots?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Do you look in the loft space?

If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof frequently shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Tarpots

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and large and complex roofs, and people most often book us about storm damage on steep or tall roofs and worn lead at chimneys and walls.

In a small place like Tarpots, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How the survey works

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Somewhere as small as Tarpots, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Honest limits

It helps to know what a survey will not do before you book:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Tips that help

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Check the loft can be reached
  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, particularly in autumn. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, inc. VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • Height and safe access
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

To find out what your survey will cost, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details. We will confirm the figure before booking.

What we need to know

There is no need for technical words. It’s enough to let us know:

  • What made you get in touch
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat

When you are ready to go ahead, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. From there it is a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day, weekday or weekend.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Tarpots

Tarpots lies within about 4 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St George, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Take a building like The Appleton School: big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Tarpots

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt
  • Lifted or split lead flashings

Shop and office owners around Eastgate Shopping Centre may find that large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
  • Their insurance cover
  • Whether VAT is added on top

What a good roof survey covers

Leave it or get it looked at?

A drone survey disturbs nothing on the roof. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Older and listed buildings around Tarpots may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
