Airspace, weather and Wrabness roofs

Wrabness lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Take an older house close to Parish Church of All Saints: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Wrabness is about 4 miles west of Harwich, in Essex. We cover Wrabness and the rest of Essex, as part of our work across London and the South East. Wrabness is one of the towns and villages in Essex we cover for drone roof surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.

Surveys in CO11 are booked the same way as anywhere else. We cover properties on Station Road, Nightingale Road and Wigeon Drive and the roads around them. We also cover Wix Green (2 miles south), Wix (2 miles south-west) and Bradfield (2 miles west). Within a short drive, we also cover Colchester (12 miles west), Clacton-on-Sea (10 miles south), Harwich (4 miles east), Camulodunum (13 miles west), Greenstead (10 miles west) and Wivenhoe (10 miles south-west).

Drone roof survey in Wrabness

Drone roof surveys are available in Wrabness and throughout London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photographs and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Typical surveys look at damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below and eroded pointing on a chimney stack, on large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

In a small place like Wrabness, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages

Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the exact price before you book.

Booking your survey

A little information up front helps. Please include:

  • When you need the report by
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window

For a price for drone roof surveys in Wrabness, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. A few details about the property and the roof help us price the survey accurately.

Practical tips

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. It’s a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, so small faults are dealt with early.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Wrabness?

From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone

Around Wrabness, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs

What to expect from a roof survey

How it works

The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. All told, expect an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Rural addresses near Wrabness can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before the survey

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Wrabness: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Wrabness?

Yes, Wrabness is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Wrabness?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

How experienced are you?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

How much is a survey?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, inc. VAT.

What if my home is near an airport?

Sometimes, with permission. Airports such as Gatwick, Luton and Southampton have flight restriction zones, and a flight inside one needs the airport’s or air traffic control’s say-so. If permission isn’t given, the roof is inspected from other safe viewpoints.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs

What you can safely check yourself

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.
