About our drone roof survey in Wix
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. Common reasons to book are vegetation in valleys and gutters and flat roofs on upper floors that hold water, on tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs.
In a small place like Wix, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
After the visit, you get a report with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Questions from Wix
Is Wix within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Is drone flying allowed in Wix?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.
What do I do with the report?
The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
How long will you be at the property?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows by email.
What you can safely check yourself
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What affects the price in Wix
Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- Which survey package you book
- House, block, shop or office
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The size of the roof
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.
Booking your survey
What helps most when you contact us:
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and the days you’d prefer.
What we look for on each type of roof
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Older roofs in small places like Wix can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Before we arrive
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Advice
Why act early in Wix
It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photos of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. For older village homes like those around Wix, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and which survey you book.
Why book with us

Airspace, weather and Wix roofs
Wix lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. The wider area around Wix has a long history of building, with Thorpe Hall about 4.3 miles south. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Anyone responsible for a site like Wix and Wrabness Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
