About our drone roof survey in Virley
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a report with photographs. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We’re often asked to look into blocked valleys and parapet gutters and plant growth and moss on the roof, across chimney stacks, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Virley, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Practical tips
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Tell us the exact address when you book
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.
Roof by roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It is almost impossible to see from ground level, but it is plain to see from the air.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.
Drone roof surveys in Virley: local notes
Virley is within about 3 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. Layer Marney Tower, about 3.1 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Virley. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.
Virley is about 4 miles south-east of Tiptree, in Essex. Roofs in Virley get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Essex. Our Essex coverage includes Virley and the places around it. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.

Why act early in Virley
Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller. For older village homes like those around Virley, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

FAQs for Virley
Is my home in Virley listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Is Virley within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when booking.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when booking.
What about my neighbours’ privacy?
We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on neighbouring gardens or windows. We only survey what the owner has asked us to. A word with next door beforehand is a good idea.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
How the survey works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. All in, the survey usually takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Virley often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- Keep pets in another room
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent

Advice
When you need someone else
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
