About our drone roof survey in Tolleshunt Major

Drones need reasonable weather. Strong wind or a downpour rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we will agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs on upper floors and valleys and parapet gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are plant growth and moss on the roof and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings.

In a small place like Tolleshunt Major, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What we cannot see

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

Tolleshunt Major questions

Will you come out to Tolleshunt Major?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tolleshunt Major?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Will I get photos?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.

Does the drone show the underside of the roof?

No. The drone sees the roof from outside only. For the underside, we check the loft where it can be reached safely, as damp and daylight frequently show there first.

Are there drone restrictions in central London?

It depends where in central London. Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas that need NATS permission. We check each address first, and fall back on other viewpoints if we cannot fly.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.

Airspace, weather and Tolleshunt Major roofs

Tolleshunt Major lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Take an older house close to Church of St Nicholas: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Layer Marney Tower lies about 4.3 miles north-east, so building around Tolleshunt Major goes back a long way. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Tolleshunt Major is about 4 miles north-east of Maldon, in Essex. Tolleshunt Major is one of many places we visit across Essex. Our area takes in places right across Essex, large and small. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.

Postcode districts we cover here for drone roof surveys: CM9. Streets in the area include Beckingham Street, Bakers Lane and Witham Road. We also work in nearby towns such as Colchester (11 miles north-east), Chelmsford (12 miles west), Braintree (11 miles north-west), Maldon (4 miles south-west), Rayleigh (14 miles south-west) and Witham (5 miles north-west).

How the survey changes by roof type

Ridges and hips

Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. We photograph them closely, as far as the flight allows.

Why get it checked now?

It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. Older and listed buildings around Tolleshunt Major may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us about the roof. We will confirm the figure before booking.

Can I check my roof myself?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

For landlords and managing agents

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. Surveys run on any day of the week, which can make access easier.

What happens on the day

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Tolleshunt Major can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Let us know about parking before the day
