What this survey cannot tell you

No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Drone roof survey in Havering's Grove

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. Typical surveys look at loose ridge and hip tiles and tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack, across tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.

Villages like Havering's Grove often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

How the survey works

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a small place like Havering's Grove, access is normally the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

Havering's Grove: your questions answered

Is Havering's Grove within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is my home in Havering's Grove listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

How long will you be at the property?

The visit usually takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. We’ll give you an idea of timing when booking.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

Central London has restricted areas where NATS permission is needed. Where we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when booking.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first, so the weather decides. Strong wind and heavy rain both rule out flying. We’ll talk through the options if the day turns bad.

Airspace, weather and Havering's Grove roofs

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Historic houses such as Ingatestone Hall, about 2.4 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Havering's Grove goes. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of All Saints, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For site and facilities teams at buildings like The Billericay School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Havering's Grove is about 2 miles west of Billericay, in Essex. We cover Havering's Grove and the rest of Essex, as part of our work across London and South East England. Havering's Grove is one of the towns and villages in Essex where we work for drone roof surveys. Chelmsford is in our area too.

We also work in nearby towns such as Chelmsford (9 miles north-east), Basildon (5 miles south-east), Harlow (15 miles north-west), Brentwood (3 miles west), Maldon (15 miles north-east) and Canvey Island (11 miles south-east).

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We will say if a specialist is needed.

Ridges and hips

The ridge takes wind from both sides. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

We confirm the price for your survey before you book. This is what makes a difference:

  • The size of the roof
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details. We will confirm the figure before booking.

Booking your survey

There’s no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:

  • Anything about access we should know
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email to find out.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Tips from our surveys

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
