About our drone roof survey in Nayland

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. Typical surveys look at ridge pieces that have lifted and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, across fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and chimney stacks.

In a small place like Nayland, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

FAQs for Nayland

Is Nayland within the area you cover?

Yes. Nayland is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Nayland?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

How long does the visit take?

Typically, it takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Pre-flight checks of the site and the weather are part of that.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

Is your drone operator registered?

Yes. Our registration covers a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We use a sub-250g drone, flown within the rules for the open category.

Roof by roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

What we’re asked to look at in Nayland

Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds

Anyone responsible for a site like Nayland Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What to check before booking

  • What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

What a roof survey includes

How it works

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. For a village or hamlet like Nayland, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

How to book

If you are buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email when you’re ready.

Advice

Can I check my roof myself?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What we can’t see

It’s useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Nayland

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, alongside lots of post-war and newer estates. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

If you live in an older home near Church of St James, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
