Drone roof surveys near Fordham Heath

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Fordham Heath

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We’re often asked to look into hidden gutters full of leaves and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, on tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and flat roofs on upper floors.

Somewhere as small as Fordham Heath, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Why get it checked now?

Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so you see the roof exactly as it is. For older village homes like those around Fordham Heath, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details. The price is agreed before a date is set.

What we can’t see

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

Drones, thermal imaging and Fordham Heath roofs

If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

Take a building like Holy Trinity CofE Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Lion Walk, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see by drone or thermal camera. Take an older house close to All Saints Church: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Fordham Heath frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

How to prepare

Advice

Different roofs, different checks

Large commercial roofs

Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically, so nothing is skipped.

Ridges and hips

Loose ridge pieces can be lifted in a storm. Spotting them early stops them falling.
