When you need someone else

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

Drone roof survey in Roydon Hamlet: what you get

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates on a high roof and lifted or split lead flashings, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Somewhere as small as Roydon Hamlet, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

What a survey costs

We confirm the price for your roof before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • The size of the roof
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Basic, Standard or Premium

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What we need to know

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It is useful to include:

  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • What’s prompted the survey

A quick phone call is usually the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or drop us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Drone roof surveys around Roydon Hamlet

In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.

Take a building like Roydon Primary School: big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

How it works

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Around Roydon Hamlet, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Related advice

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

FAQs for Roydon Hamlet

Do you cover smaller places like Roydon Hamlet?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Roydon Hamlet?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in Roydon Hamlet?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, confirmed before anything is booked.

Can you survey in bad weather?

Light rain is usually fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In high wind or heavy rain, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, and we’d agree another day.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. Photographs are part of every report.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

What we look for on each type of roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.

Common roof problems in Roydon Hamlet

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls

If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
